Ivy Greene Academy centers its philosophy on the "Hero's Journey," encouraging learners to discover their passions and unique gifts. It emphasizes learner-led learning, where learners take ownership of their education, set goals, track progress, and participate in decision-making processes regarding studio rules, scheduling, and even disciplinary actions. The Academy aims to cultivate independent, lifelong learners who are prepared to find their calling and make a positive impact on the world.
Unlike traditional schools, Ivy Greene Academy emphasizes hands-on, project-based learning, experiential learning expeditions (Quests) and individualized encouragement. There are no traditional teachers; instead, Guides facilitate learning by asking insightful questions and helping learners arrive at their own conclusions. Homework and standardized testing are minimized. The focus is on real-world skills, character development, and fostering an entrepreneurial mindset.
"Studios" are the learning environments at Ivy Greene, designed to encourage creation and personal expression, rather than traditional classrooms. "Quests" are experiential learning expeditions that allow learners to explore topics in depth through hands-on activities, promoting teamwork, problem-solving, and goal-setting skills.
Being "learner-led" means that learners are actively involved in shaping their learning experience and the school community. This includes participating in decisions regarding studio rules, scheduling, and school systems. Learners are also responsible for setting their own learning goals, tracking their progress, navigating relationships, and reflecting on their experiences. Age-appropriate freedoms are given to learners to the greatest extent possible.
Ivy Greene Academy is rooted in a core set of values, known as HEROES:
